DURHAM, N.C. – The 14th ranked Duke women's basketball team kicked off its preseason by hosting Pfeiffer for an exhibition contest Thursday night, downing the Falcons 113-36 in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Sophomore Azurá Stevens highlighted the Blue Devils' performance, stuffing the stat sheet with 29 points on a near-perfect 12-of-13 shooting, nine rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Redshirt sophomore Rebecca Greenwell was dialed in from deep, connecting on 3-of-5 from deep on her way to 22 points while adding five rebounds, five assists and five steals.
The two teams played even through the first five minutes, matching each other shot for shot as the score stood tied at 7-7 halfway through the first quarter. Duke quickly gained the upper hand, however, going on a 13-4 run to end the quarter, fueled by shooting 5-of-6 from the field during that stretch. Stevens led the charge early for the Blue Devils, scoring nine points of Duke's 20 first-quarter points and pulling down four boards.
Duke transitioned seamlessly into the second period, building its lead to 21 points with a 13-1 run over the next five minutes before heading to halftime up 46-21. Stevens again paced the home team offensively, pouring in 10 second-quarter points to bring her total to 19 on 7-of-8 shooting at the break. Rookies Kyra Lambert and Haley Gorecki were Duke's next leading scorers over the first half with six points apiece, while Lambert showed off her quick hands on defense with five steals. The Blue Devils locked down the Falcons' offense in the first half, forcing Pfeiffer to shoot 8-of-30 from the floor (26.7 percent) and turn the ball over 13 times.
Junior Oderah Chidom and Greenwell came out of the break strong and controlled the third period, helping the Blue Devils build an 82-30 lead heading into the final quarter. The Duke duo registered 14 and 11 points, respectively, while the Falcons scored just nine during the third quarter.
The final quarter featured more of the same from the Blue Devils as Greenwell drained back-to-back threes to start it off. The Blue Devils continued to roll the rest of the way, outscoring the Falcons 31-6 in the fourth quarter. Gorecki added 10 more points in the second half, joining Stevens, Greenwell and Chidom in double-figures.
The Blue Devils will return to Cameron Indoor Stadium for their second and final exhibition game Sunday, Nov. 8, hosting Saint Leo at 1:00 p.m. Admission to Sunday's game will be free to the public.
