ANN ARBOR, Mich. –University of Michigan jumped out to a fast start and posted bonus points in six matches to post a 33-7 victory over Duke in non-conference wrestling action this evening. The match versus the 17th-ranked Wolverines was the final regular season dual for the Blue Devils.
Duke completes its regular season with an 11-7 overall record that featured a pair of wins over Big Ten foes and a victory over No. 25 NC State. Five of Duke's seven losses this season came against top 25 foes.
Michigan (9-6) won the first four matches against the Blue Devils before senior Marcus Cain put the Duke on the board with a major decision at 149. Six of Michigan's 10 starters are ranked among the top 20 nationally.
Cain, fresh off of garnering the 50th win of his career, dominated the action against Angelo Latora to improve to 18-6 on the year. The Winston-Salem, N.C., native jumped out to a 4-1 first-period lead and extended it to 6-2 after the second. He never relinquished in the third as he worked towards earning his third major decision of the year.
After posting a thrilling comeback victory in overtime the night prior, redshirt junior Trey Adamson matched his efforts against the Wolverines with a last-second 4-3 decision over Jake Salazar. Adamson trailed 3-1 after two periods and quickly escaped to start the third to make it a one-point match. Needing a takedown for the win, Adamson finally broke through with fewer than 10 seconds left to score two points and erase Salazar's riding time advantage and pick up the win.
At 141 pounds, Evan Botwin nearly pulled out a victory over George Fisher in the third period but ran out of time to get the turn. Botwin, down 6-4 after two periods and starting the third in the top position, was outstanding on top as Fisher got hit with a second stall call to make it 6-5. With a leg in on Fisher, Botwin worked to turn the redshirt freshman but ran out of time as Fisher escaped with the 6-5 decision.
Duke will have a week break as it prepares for the ACC Championships March 8 in Pittsburgh, Pa.
