ATHENS, Ga. –Freshman MaryEllen Targonski earned a spot in the women's 1-meter springboard final to lead Duke on the second day of the 2015 NCAA Zone B Diving Championships, held at the University of Georgia's Gabrielsen Natatorium.
Targonski, who hails from Gastonia, N.C., placed 18th in the field of 48 divers in Tuesday morning's preliminaries with a score of 254.35. She improved upon that performance in the final, totaling 262.80 points on her list to move up to 15th – just five spots shy of gaining NCAA Championship qualification. The rookie received an award of 49.40 on a forward 2 ½ somersault in the second round and 50.40 points on an inward 1 ½ somersault in the following round.
Targonski also paced the Blue Devils in Monday's 3-meter competition, coming in 24th in the preliminaries.
Sophomore Kirby Quinn and junior Kendall McClenney also represented Duke in the 1-meter preliminaries Tuesday, with Quinn finishing 28th (239.40) and McClenney 34th (227.00).
Wednesday will see the Zone B divers take to the platform beginning with preliminaries at 10 a.m. The top eight finishers in the final will be eligible to compete at the NCAA Championship later this month in Greensboro, N.C.
