ATHENS, Ga. – A pair of Blue Devil divers wrapped up the 2015 NCAA Zone B Diving Championships in strong fashion, garnering top-15 finishes in the women's platform final Wednesday at the University of Georgia's Gabrielsen Natatorium.
Junior Jaimee Gundry and freshman MaryEllen Targonski both qualified to compete in the platform event after surpassing the NCAA Zones qualification standard during the course of the regular season.
Wednesday morning's preliminaries saw Targonski total 227.25 points to place 10th out of 31 divers. Gundry was 24th after three dives but scored over 49 points on each of her final two efforts to also secure a spot in the final with a 15th-place showing (221.15).
Targonski, who was a championship finalist on the platform at last month's ACC Championship, received over 54 points on each of her first three dives in Wednesday's final. She was awarded 63.00 points from the judges in the second round on a forward 3 ½ somersault for a 3.0 degree of difficulty and concluded the competition in ninth place – just one spot shy of automatic NCAA Championship qualification – with a combined total of 485.70 points. Her 258.45 points in the final marked a career best and ranked her fourth on Duke's all-time top-10 chart.
The platform performance rounded out an impressive meet for the Blue Devil freshman, who also reached the Zone B final on the 1-meter springboard and was 24th in the 3-meter preliminaries.
Gundry joined Targonski in improving upon her list in the platform final, receiving 226.70 points to push her combined total to 447.85, good for 15th place overall. She opened the event final with 54.60 points on an inward 2 ½ somersault and followed up that dive with a forward 3 ½ somersault for a 3.0 degree of difficulty that netted the junior 58.50 points.
