ST. LOUIS –Duke University redshirt junior Conner Hartmann concluded his 2014-15 season with a sixth-place finish at the 2015 NCAA Wrestling Championship today in the Scottrade Center. Hartmann earned a spot on the podium and All-America honors at 197 pounds for the second consecutive season.
Duke's second two-time All-American, Hartmann headed to the consolation semifinals after his semifinal loss to No. 3 seed Kyven Gadson Friday night. The loss pitted him against No. 5 seed Scott Schiller of Minnesota in the medal round Saturday morning.
Schiller, who defeated Hartmann last season at the NCAA Championship, scored an early takedown and was outstanding on top in the third period to earn the 3-1 decision. Hartmann escaped and took a shot late in the final stanza, but simply ran out of time.
Hartmann, for the second time this season, concluded a tournament against reigning NCAA champ J'Den Cox of Missouri. In a rematch of the Southern Scuffle final, Hartmann and Cox were evenly matched throughout regulation. The pair traded escapes to head to overtime tied at one apiece. After a scoreless first overtime session, they both escaped with relative ease early in the 30-second tiebreak periods. However, with five seconds left Cox took one final shot and was able to get control for the takedown and 4-2 win as time expired.
Hartmann finishes the year with a 29-5 overall record, an ACC title at 197 pounds, a perfect 5-0 ACC regular season record, a second All-America award and ultimately a spot on the NCAA podium.
The Blue Devils sit in 28th place of 69 teams with 14 points. Duke finished 29th last season, which was a program-best at the time. The 14 points are the most since Duke scored 17 in 2009.
