GREENSBORO, N.C. – Duke University freshmen Leah Goldman and Isabella Paez both returned to the water for a final time Saturday, March 21 to round out their first NCAA Championships meet.
Goldman, who also competed in the 100-yard butterfly and 200 IM this weekend at the Greensboro Aquatic Center, placed 58th in the 100 freestyle trials Saturday morning with a time of 49.85. She concluded her first season at Duke the program record-holder in the 100 butterfly (52.28) after earning All-ACC honors with a third-place finish in the event at the ACC Championship.
A day after joining Goldman in the 100 butterfly, Paez covered the 200-yard distance in 1:57.37 Saturday. That clocking placed her 32nd in the field, up seven spots from her pre-meet seeding. The Medley, Fla., native also wrapped up an impressive freshman campaign as the school record-holder in the 200 butterfly (1:56.92) and ranked fourth in the 100 butterfly (53.62).
"Leah and Isa did very well as freshmen for their first time at the NCAA Championship," said head coach Dan Colella. "We're very proud of their performances. For them to compete with a great sense of confidence, I think it just bodes well for the future. They're definitely excited to get back here next year and move up and be in a position to score. I think they absolutely had a ball competing at this level."
The Duke women were represented at the NCAA Championship for the third consecutive season. Goldman and Paez were two of just six freshmen swimmers from the ACC who qualified to compete at the NCAA meet this year.
Up next, the Blue Devil men will take their turn at NCAAs March 26-28 in Iowa City, Iowa. Sophomore Peter Kropp was invited in the 100 breaststroke and is also eligible to compete in the 200 breaststroke and the 200 IM. He will join sophomore Kaz Takabayashi, junior David Armstrong and sophomore James Peek on Duke's 200 medley relay.
