ATHENS, Ga. – A trio of Blue Devil divers took to the 3-meter springboard on the opening day of competition at the 2015 NCAA Zone B Diving Championships, hosted by the University of Georgia.
Monday afternoon's preliminaries saw junior Jaimee Gundry, sophomore Kirby Quinn and freshman MaryEllen Targonski compete after each posted qualifying scores at the 3-meter height during the regular season.
Targonski headlined the Duke contingent with a 24th-place finish in the 45-diver field. The Gastonia, N.C., native totaled a score of 262.10 points on her list of six dives. Two of her dives topped the 48-point mark, including an inward 2 ½ somersault in the third round (48.60) and a back 1 ½ somersault with 1 ½ twists in the final round (48.00).
Quinn placed 28th overall with an award of 254.15 points and Gundry was 42nd at 215.25.
The action continues in Athens Tuesday, March 10 at 10 a.m. with the preliminaries and finals of the women's 1-meter competition. The top 10 finishers in the event will be eligible to compete at the NCAA Championship later this month in Greensboro, N.C.
