DURHAM, N.C.—The Duke University wrestling team not only turned in a great season on the mat in 2014-15, but had an excellent showing in the classroom as well. The Blue Devils placed four wrestlers on the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic squad and ranked sixth nationally in team GPA.
Marcus Cain, Brian Dorsey, Conner Hartmann and Jacob Kasper all earned All-Academic recognition for their work in the classroom and success on the wrestling mat. The four honorees are tied for the most in program history, matching the total from 2008. As a team, Duke finished with a 3.302 GPA, the highest in the ACC. NC State was the only other ACC squad to earn a spot on the list of 30 teams.
Cain also received the team's Scholar Athlete Award after having the most memorable season of his career this past season. He posted a 22-9 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Championships after landing on the podium in third place at the ACC Championships. Duke's 149-pounder was a tireless worker on the mat and especially in the classroom as an electrical engineering major. He was named to the All-ACC Academic Team for the second time in his career this past season and recently graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree.
Wrestling at 165 pounds, Dorsey finished the year with a 17-10 record. He started in 10 duals on the year, going 5-5 overall. He took third at the Hokie Open and sixth at the Wolfpack Open and registered an impressive five falls on the year. Dorsey also was named to the All-ACC Academic squad.
A two-time All-American, Hartmann brought home an ACC title and NCAA sixth-place finish at 197 pounds this season. The Port Orchard, Wash., native finished the year as the team's Most Outstanding Wrestler with three tournament wins and a runner-up finish at the prestigious Southern Scuffle and 21-5 overall record. He is Duke's second two-time All-American and was the first Blue Devil to win an ACC championship since 2010.
Kasper, Duke's leader at 184 pounds, had a breakout sophomore season for the Blue Devils. He finished the year with a 24-12 overall record and a runner-up finish at the ACC Championships to earn a spot in the NCAA Championship field. Kasper went 10-5 in duals and 3-2 against ACC foes. Eight of his 12 losses came against ranked opponents. He also was named to the All-ACC Academic team for his efforts.
The Blue Devils had a record-setting year on the mat in 2014-15, finishing 11-5 overall and taking fourth at the ACC Championship. Duke defeated a pair of Big Ten foes for the first time in program history and sent a program-best five wrestlers to the NCAA Championship. Hartmann took sixth overall to capture his second All-America award.
