CARY, N.C. – The Duke women's tennis team carried the momentum from day one of the Duke James Bonk Invite into day two of play, posting a perfect 4-0 record in doubles and advancing three singles competitors to the finals of their respective draws.
Senior Beatrice Capra and freshman Ellyse Hamlin remained perfect on the weekend in doubles action, downing TCU's Caroline Wegner and Mia King, 8-5. Similar to Capra and Hamlin, the duo of junior Chalena Scholl and freshman Jessica Ho maintained its clean slate on the weekend by defeating Georgia Tech's Kendal Woodard and Paige Hourigan, 8-7 (2). Sophomore Samantha Harris and freshman Kaitlyn McCarthy also continued their success as a doubles pair, outlasting Florida's Belinda Woolcock and Kourtney Keegan, 8-7 (6).
The tandem of junior Alyssa Smith and sophomore Rebecca Smaller earned its first victory of the weekend, defeating Joanna Nalborska and Bianca Moldovan of NC State, 8-5.
In singles, Ho, McCarthy and Scholl each reached the finals of their respective draws. After receiving a bye in the quarterfinal round, Scholl defeated Ashley Dai of North Carolina, 6-1, 6-3, to earn a spot in the final of the Grey draw, where she will face Florida's Kourtney Keegan. Ho required three sets to earn a win over North Carolina's Chloe Oullet-Pizer, downing the Tar Heel, 1-6, 6-4, 6-0, while McCarthy cruised in her semifinal match against Erica Susi of Virginia, 6-2, 6-3. McCarthy will face Skylar Morton of Virginia in the final of the White draw on Sunday.
Smith, Hamlin and Smaller were unable to secure victories on their respective singles courts. Smith fell to Keegan, 6-1, 6-0, and will face Dai of North Carolina in a third-place match. Hamlin jumped out to an early lead against her opponent, Cassandra Vazquez of North Carolina, but was unable to hold on for the victory, falling in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. In the Black draw, Smaller dropped her match against Virginia's Maci Epstein in straight sets, falling, 6-2, 6-2.
The final day of competition for the Duke James Bonk Invite begins Sunday morning at 9 a.m.
