CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.—A pair of Duke wrestlers landed on the podium at the 2016 Defense Soap & Flips Wrestling Southern Scuffle with redshirt senior Conner Hartmann leading the way with a third-place finish at 197 pounds. Mitch Finesilver joined Hartmann with a fifth-place showing at 149 pounds.
Duke finished 12th overall with 43.5 points, the highest finish at the Southern Scuffle in program history. It is a six-spot and 11-point improvement from a year ago.
The Blue Devils opened the day in outstanding fashion, going 5-2 in the first matches of day two. Three of the five wins came over ranked opponents, including a second victory of the year for Jake Faust over No. 9 Jim Wilson. Faust dominated Stanford's Wilson in a 6-1 victory.
Mitch Finesilver defeated 20th-ranked Patricio Lugo of Edinboro 3-1 to advance to the semifinals in his first Southern Scuffle appearance, while Brian Dorsey upset No. 17 Brian Harvey of Army West Point in an 11-10 thriller. Zach Finesilver needed just 2:51 to pin Dylan Realbuto of Cornell, while Hartmann cruised past Parker Hines 13-0.
Faust and Dorsey both saw their days ended in the next round. Zach Finesilver fell to Javier Gasca in an 8-7 heartbreaker to finish his first Southern Scuffle showing with a 3-2 record.
Mitch and Hartmann also both suffered semifinal setbacks to land in the consolation brackets. After a tough 8-6 loss in the consolation semifinal, Mitch rebounded in a big way to beat No. 12 Anthony Collica of Oklahoma State to take fifth place overall. The win was the third ranked victory for the sophomore 149-pounder.
Hartmann, after losing on a late takedown by No. 5 Brett Pfarr in the semifinals, dominated in his final two bouts. He defeated No. 10 Zach Nye of Virginia with ease at 5-0 and turned in an outstanding third period of riding to beat eighth-ranked Jake Smith of West Virginia. Hartmann has just one loss this season as he heads into a busy January.
The Blue Devils open ACC wrestling action Jan. 6 when it hosts No. 3 NC State. First match is at 7 p.m., and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
