DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's swimming and diving team earned a top-20 ranking in the first College Swimming Coaches Association of America/TYR Top 25 Swimming & Diving Poll of the season. The Blue Devils came in at No. 19 following a 3-0 weekend at a quad meet in Christiansburg, Va.
The women collected dual meet victories over host Virginia Tech (189-163), West Virginia (281-71) and William & Mary (282-64) to start the year 3-0 and 1-0 in ACC competition. The squad was bolstered by individual victories in seven events, as well as two relay wins.
Senior Maddie Rusch led the way with first-place finishes in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle and the 100 butterfly, while also competing on Duke's winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. Rusch headlined one-two-three finishes by the Blue Devils in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly and earned NCAA 'B' cuts in both performances. Fellow senior Ashleigh Shanley also contributed a pair of individual victories in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events.
The Blue Devils were one of six ACC teams listed in the initial women's rankings, joining No. 3 Louisville, No. 4 NC State, No. 6 Virginia, No. 20 North Carolina and No. 24 Notre Dame.
The Duke men received votes in the first CSCAA poll of the year following a 2-1 weekend in Christiansburg. The Blue Devils topped West Virginia (288-64) and William & Mary (251.5-94.5) but fell to the Hokies (210.5-141.5) to sit at 2-1 overall and 0-1 in ACC action.
Sophomore Max St. George turned in a first-place finish in the 100 backstroke and took second at the 200-yard distance while leading off the winning 200 and 400 medley relays. He was joined on both winning relays by senior Peter Kropp, who won the 100 breaststroke with an NCAA 'B' cut of 54.63. On the boards, freshman Nathaniel Hernandez impressed in his collegiate debut, winning the men's 1-meter springboard competition and taking second on the 3-meter.
