WINDSOR, Ontario – Duke alumna Ashley Twichell took home a silver medal in the women's 800-meter freestyle Thursday at the FINA World Championships (25m), held at Windsor, Canada's WFCU Centre.
Twichell and Leah Smith earned a one-two finish for the United States, going stroke-for-stroke until the final 400 meters of the race. Smith clocked 8:10.17 in a first-place showing while Twichell touched in a personal-best 8:11.95 for second. Kiah Melverton of Australia claimed bronze with a time of 8:16.51.
Twichell also competed in Friday's 400m freestyle preliminaries, placing ninth at 4:05.27.
A 2011 graduate of Duke, Twichell was an All-American and ACC champion in the 1,650-yard freestyle. She has gone on to excel in open water swimming, winning the RCP Tiburon Mile this fall for the third straight time. The former Blue Devil volunteer assistant coach also put together a strong season in the pool recently, making a finals appearance in the 800m freestyle at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
