NEW YORK—Duke University redshirt senior Conner Hartmann concluded his outstanding wrestling career Saturday with a seventh-place finish at 197 pounds at the 2016 NCAA Wrestling Championships held in Madison Square Garden. It marks his unprecedented third time on the podium at the NCAA Championships.
Hartmann, fresh off of making history Friday night after becoming Duke's first wrestler to earn All-America honors three times, went out with a win, defeating Patrick Downey of Iowa State by major decision, 11-2.
The Port Orchard, Wash., native controlled the match from the start, scoring an early takedown and riding out the first period. He tacked on six more points in the second period, getting the nearfall. In full control with a major decision in his sights, Hartmann added another takedown in the third period and the riding time bonus point for the 11-2 victory over Downey.
The list of accolades is for Hartmann is long. He is the first Duke wrestler to be a three-time All-American, the first to qualify for four consecutive NCAA Championships and leaves Duke ranking fourth all-time in wins with 98. His .765 win percentage is ninth in Duke history and he became just the 13th wrestler in program history to record 30 wins in a season.
A two-time ACC Champion, Hartmann finished the year with a 30-3 overall record and will depart as Duke's most decorated wrestler.
The Blue Devils finished in 31st place with 11 points overall. They were the third-highest scoring team in the ACC, besting North Carolina, Virginia and Pittsburgh.
