DURHAM, N.C. – Two Blue Devil swimmers have earned invitations to the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships March 15-18 in Indianapolis. Duke also qualified a program-record three relays to the NCAA meet, including two that surpassed automatic standards two weeks ago at the ACC Championships.
Junior Leah Goldman was selected to the NCAA field for the third consecutive season while freshman Alyssa Marsh will make her NCAA Championships debut later this month in Indianapolis.
Goldman collected her third-straight NCAA selection in the 100-yard butterfly, an event in which she earned All-ACC honors this year with a second-place finish at the conference championship. She turned in a time of 51.62 in the championship final to shatter her own program record and secure a spot on the 100 butterfly podium for the second time in three years. Goldman's 51.62 clocking ranks her 13th on the NCAA official psych sheet.
Goldman was also invited to NCAAs with a 1:57.33 clocking during the fall in the 200 individual medley. That mark set the school record and seeds her 34th heading into nationals. A native of Burlingame, Calif., Goldman has additionally surpassed the NCAA provisional standard this season in the 100 freestyle (49.29).
Marsh will join Goldman in Indianapolis after receiving an invitation in the 100 butterfly as well. The Blue Devil rookie from Davidson, N.C., tied for seventh in the championship final at ACCs after posting the second-fastest time in school history during preliminaries at 52.43. That mark places her 36th in the NCAA field. Marsh has also collected NCAA 'B' cuts this season in the 50 (22.50) and 100 (49.44) freestyle.
The Blue Devils automatically qualified their 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays to the NCAA meet with strong showings at the ACC Championships. Duke is also eligible to compete its 400 freestyle relay, which surpassed the NCAA provisional standard with a 3:16.60 performance two weeks ago in Atlanta. The 200 freestyle relay, swam by senior Maddie Rusch, sophomore Maddie Hess, Marsh and Goldman at the ACC Championships, is seeded in the top 16 (1:28.51).
Rusch is listed as the fourth alternate for the NCAA Championships with a 'B' cut of 22.25 in the 50 freestyle. Junior Isabella Paez is the sixth alternate with a provisional standard of 1:56.61 in the 200 butterfly.
The Blue Devils will also await the results of next week's NCAA Zone B Diving Championships to round out the potential NCAA roster.
