SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Duke volleyball team closed out the regular season Friday afternoon, falling to Notre Dame 3-1 (17-25, 17-25, 25-22, 10-25) at Purcell Pavilion in South Bend, Ind.
With the loss, the Blue Devils end the 2019 season 12-19 overall and 5-13 in conference play as the Irish elevate to 19-9 and 12-6.
Notre Dame featured three players in double-digit kills and were led by Charley Niego with a whopping .415 hitting percentage with 20 kills, Caroline Meuth with 17 and Sydney Bent with 16. As a team, the Irish hit .292 for the match.
The Blue Devils were led by sophomore
Ade Owokoniran with 15 kills and just two errors to hit an impressive .464 percent and junior
Payton Schwantz with 12 kills and 21 digs for her eighth double-double of the season. Schwantz's 21 digs marks her third 20+ dig performance this season.
Defensively, freshman
Lizzie Fleming recorded four blocks while Owokoniran added three as libero
Mackenzie Cole picked up 18 digs.
Notre Dame opened the contest hitting .327 with 19 kills and just three errors and followed up by hitting .371 percent in the second set with 17 kills and four errors as Duke went .256 and .118, respectively.
The Blue Devils came out hot in the third set and registered eight blocks as Fleming added three in the outing. Schwantz collected her 10th kill of the match for her eighth double-double of the season and helped guide the Blue Devils to a third set 25-22 victory to force a fourth set. The Irish had nine hitting errors to hit just .111 percent to allow Duke to capitalize.
Notre Dame was unstoppable in the fourth and what would become the final set with a 20-6 scoring run that featured 13 kills and just one error to hit .387 percent.
