DURHAM – The No. 6 Duke women's tennis team (2-0) wrapped up its home-opening weekend with a 4-2 decision over No. 23 Princeton (0-4) Sunday afternoon at Sheffield Tennis Center.
"We competed our tails off in singles, especially at the top of the lineup. Princeton is really good at the top of the lineup," said head coach
Jamie Ashworth. "Their 1-2-3 are as good as anyone in the country so to be able to win two of those matchups was great for us."
Princeton took an early 1-0 lead after collecting the doubles point, but Duke earned the first doubles victory of the afternoon behind senior
Georgia Drummy and sophomore
Karolina Berankova's win over Victoria Hu/Leena Bennetto. The Duke duo jumped out to 4-0 lead and never looked back, going on to grab a 6-1 win.
In a matchup of top-20 ranked doubles partners on court one, the Tiger's seventh-ranked tandem of Daria Frayman/Grace Joyce defeated the Blue Devils' No. 20 pairing of junior
Chloe Beck and senior
Margaryta Bilokin, 6-3. The Duke duo of senior
Kelly Chen and freshman
Ellie Coleman were in a tight battle with Nathalie Rodilosso/Brianna Shvets, but the Tigers were able to hold off the Blue Devils and clinch the doubles point with a 7-5 win.
As the action switched over to singles it was Duke who seized the momentum with wins in two of the top three spots. No. 26
Emma Jackson set the tone with her defeat of Leena Bennetto in straight sets (6-1, 6-2) to tie the overall match score at 1-1. Princeton regained a 2-1 edge with Neha Velaga's 6-3, 6-3 triumph over No. 48
Ellie Coleman, but that would be the last match that went the way of the Tigers.
In a fierce battle on court one, No. 73
Georgia Drummy got the Blue Devils back on track with her victory over Daria Frayman – the fourth-ranked singles player in the nation. Drummy jumped out to a 4-1 ledger and went on to take the first set, 6-3, before easing to a 6-2 victory in set two for her second ranked singles win of the weekend.
Bilokin competed in her first singles action of the spring and collected a critical point for the Blue Devils with a straight set victory. The senior dominated her match against Grayce Joyce en route to collecting a 6-3, 6-1 win, which put Duke in the lead for good.
"It was the first singles match [of the season] for Bilokin," added Ashworth. "To come in there – she kind of got thrown in there a little bit – she did a great job for us."
Court two featured a top-25 matchup between No. 15
Chloe Beck and 23rd-ranked Victoria Hu. With her teammates cheering her on, Beck secured the match point for the home team with two hard-fought wins. After facing an early 3-2 deficit, the junior took three of the next four games to take the first set 6-4.
Set two was even more tightly contested than the first. Hu held an early advantage once again, but Beck battled back to tie it at three games apiece. The two opponents were neck-and-neck over the remainder of the set which resulted in a 6-6 score with a tiebreaker needed to decide the final point. Beck showed her poise and breezed to a 7-2 tiebreaker decision to claim the match, and win, for the Blue Devils.
Chen was competing against No. 60 Brianna Shvets when the match point was clinched. Shvets took the first set 7-5, while the second set was tied 5-5.
"I thought we did a really good job recovering in the singles," said Ashworth. "Against a team that good - they've taken some losses early but they're going to end up being one of the top teams in the country. I thought if we could get on top of them, based on the schedule they've played, we could break them down a little bit and we were able to do that. Hats off to our team for rebounding after doubles and putting it together for some really quality singles."
