BALTIMORE, Md.— In its first road game of the season, No. 25 Duke women's lacrosse fell in overtime, 12-11, to No. 10 Johns Hopkins at Homewood Field on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Devils are now 2-1 on the season.
Johns Hopkins led the entire game until senior
Carly Bernstein netted her fifth goal of the game with less than a minute to play, tying the score at 11-11 and forcing overtime. The Blue Jays secured the win 2:18 into overtime with the decisive goal.
How it Happened
- The Blue Jays opened scoring with five goals within the first 10 minutes. Sophomore Bella Goodwin put Duke on the board by converting a free position shot, but Johns Hopkins maintained a 6-1 lead.
- Defensively, freshman Amanda Paci recorded three ground balls while redshirt junior goalie Kennedy Everson made two saves in the first quarter. Johns Hopkins' Ashley Mackin notched her fourth goal of the game in the final 30 seconds of the first quarter, giving the Blue Jays a 7-1 lead.
- The Blue Devils opened scoring in the second quarter, as senior Mattie Shearer scored off an assist from Bernstein to make it 7-2. Duke continued its run with two more goals, as Goodwin converted her second free position shot with 2:14 remining in the half, and at 0:56, Bernstein made it 7-4 as she found the back of the cage off an assist from Shearer.
- Duke held Johns Hopkins scoreless in the second quarter, forced five turnovers, won 10 of 18 ground balls, and was 7-for-9 on clears in narrowing its deficit.
- Just 30 seconds into the third quarter, redshirt sophomore Eva Pronti made it 7-5, extending Duke's run to 4-0.
- Duke held the Blue Jays' scoreless for 18:34 before Johns Hopkins went on a 3-0 run in the third quarter to increase its lead to 10-5. Redshirt sophomore Ava Biancardi snapped Johns Hopkins' run with 2:34 left in the third as she put one in the back of the cage. Less than a minute later, Bernstein made it 10-7, scoring her free position attempt.
- Duke went into the fourth quarter down 10-7.
- With 13:16 remining in the game, Duke made it 10-8, as Bernstein scored her third goal of the day off a feed from Pronti. On the other end of the field, Everson made a huge save at 12:40 to keep the game within two.
- Goodwin made it 10-9 Blue Jays, as she scored her third of the day from a Bernstein assist with 11:43 remaining. At 8:54, Everson made another big save, but the Blue Jays converted on a free position shot at 8:26 to make it 11-9.
- At 7:09, Everson recorded her eighth save, to keep the score at 11-9. At 4:10, Bernstein scored her fourth goal, cutting the Blue Jays' lead back down to one (11-10). Everson recorded her ninth save at 2:31, leading to junior Sydney Smith getting a ground ball.
- With less than a minute to play, Bernstein found herself open in the middle of the Blue Jays' defense, where Biancardi connected the pass, and Bernstein buried the equalizer to send the game to overtime.
- Johns Hopkins scored the game-winner in overtime, sealing the 12-11 victory.

- Duke still leads the all-time series against Johns Hopkins, 8-3.
- Bernstein recorded a season-high five goals, bringing her career total to 49.
- Bernstein also tallied three assists, while Biancardi added two. Pronti and Shearer each recorded one.
