DURHAM, N.C. - The 15th-ranked Duke men's soccer team opens the 2025 season with a ranked clash, welcoming No. 10 San Diego to Koskinen Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 21. The Blue Devils' match is the nightcap of a tripleheader of soccer at Koskinen Stadium, after UC San Diego men's soccer faces Furman at 3:30 p.m., followed by No. 1 Duke women's soccer vs. Northwestern at 6 p.m. One ticket is good for all three matches.Â
MATCHUP NOTES
- Duke leads the all-time series, 2-1-2, but is looking to avenge the lone loss in the series, which came in the Blue Devils' final game of the season last year, a 1-0 loss in the second round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament.
- The Blue Devils and Toreros also met in the season opener last season, a match that ended in a 2-2 draw.
- Duke's last win at Koskinen Stadium over San Diego was a 1-0 victory during the 2022 campaign.
FIRST TOUCH
- Thursday kicks off the 18th season with John Kerr at the helm of the Duke men's soccer program, with the head coach holding a 171-111-44 record as a Blue Devil and an all-time coaching record of 252-170-57.
- The Blue Devils have had sustained success inside the friendly confines of Koskinen Stadium, entering the 2025 campaign with a 121-48-28 (.685) ledger over the last 17 seasons. Duke is also 8-4-5 under Kerr in season openers.
- The Blue Devils return key pieces from last season's squad, including four All-ACC selections. Ulfur Bjornsson was selected as a First Team All-ACC honoree, while Kamran Acito and Kenan Hot earned Third Team recognition. Rising sophomore Jamie Kabuusu was Duke's lone honoree on the Freshman Team.Â
PRESEASON ACCOLADES FOR WOLFIE
- After a strong sophomore season that saw Ulfur Bjornsson lead the team in goals (13) and points (29), the junior forward has garnered national attention ahead of the 2025 season.
- The striker, whose first name translates to Wolf, debuted as the No. 1 player in preseason Top 100 by TopDrawerSoccer (TDS), was included on United Soccer Coaches' Forwards to Watch list, is a First Team Starting XI selection by TDS and was named as a Preseason Player to Watch in the ACC.
PRESEASON REPORT
- Duke once again played three preseason exhibition matches, with two of them coming away from home. The Blue Devils opened the 2025 preseason with a 1-1 draw at Coastal Carolina before traveling to UNC Asheville for a 5-1 win. Duke closed the preseason with a 3-0 home win over James Madison.
