DURHAM, N.C. – Duke men's golf opened the
Bob Heintz era in resounding fashion, capturing the team title at the 15th annual Rod Myers Invitational on Sunday at Duke University Golf Club.
The Blue Devils posted a three-round score of 844 (-20) to finish nine strokes clear of runner-up UNCW (853, -11). Indiana placed third at 858 (-6).
The 20-under-par team score marks the Blue Devils' second-best 54-hole total in the 15-year history of the event, and the best since 2017 (-22).
Junior
Bryan Kim paced Duke with a 7-under 209, highlighted by a closing 3-under 69, to finish second individually behind medalist John Logan of UNCW at 207 (-9). Kim's runner-up performance is the best individual finish by a Blue Devil at the Invitational since 2019, when Adrien Pendaries also placed second.
Duke senior
Ethan Evans tied for third at 210 (-6), bouncing back from a second-round 73 with a 69 on Sunday. Fellow senior
William Love placed seventh at 211 (-5) after opening with a 69 and following with steady rounds of 70 and 72.
Freshman
Charles Nelson provided a lift with a final-round 70 to tie for 33rd (221, +5), while sophomore
John Hiller tied for 38th at 222 (+6). Overall, Duke placed three golfers inside the top 10 in a field of 72 competitors.
Heintz, a former PGA Tour professional who has been with the Duke coaching staff since 2017, was elevated to the head coaching role during the summer.
"Anytime you can get production from everyone on the team in an event, that's a positive," Heintz said. "When it got tough today, they played better. That's a really strong sign that things are going the right direction. I couldn't be happier with that result."
The victory marked Duke's fourth all-time win at the Rod Myers Invitational, joining team titles in 2011, 2012 and 2023.
The event honors the late Rod Myers, Duke's longtime coach who guided the program for 34 years until his passing in 2007. The Blue Devils have hosted the Invitational since 2010 in his memory.
The 22 golfers playing as individuals during the weekend competed in the John H. Ryan Memorial, held in memory of former Blue Devil John H. Ryan, Jr., a two-year letterwinner who passed away in a boating accident before his junior year in 1983.
Senior
Daniel Choi was Duke's top finisher in the Memorial at 217 (+1), which included a 1-under 71 in the second round, good for fifth place among the individuals and tied for 23rd overall. Sophomore
Ollie Mukherjee secured the sixth spot on the Memorial leaderboard with a closing 1-under 71 for a 219 (+3) total.
Eric Zhao of Princeton claimed medalist honors for the John H. Ryan Memorial at 210 (-6), which included a first-round 67 (-5).
Duke returns to action on Sept. 15-16 at The Invitational at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tennessee.
