HAVERFORD, Pa. – A pair of second-place finishes by junior
Sophia Shen (foil) and freshman
Zachary Shoman (sabre) and a third-place showing by rookie
Abdelrahman Tolba (foil) headlined a solid outing for Duke fencing at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Saturday.
Overall, the Blue Devils had 14 fencers turn in top-10 performances.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Shen, Shoman and Tolba were the highest placing Blue Devils at the regional meet, with sophomores Joseph Glasson and Owen Li finishing just behind them at fourth and fifth, respectively, in men's foil.
- Duke's other top-10 performers include graduate student Yeva Mazur (6th, epee), freshman Ethan Huang (7th, sabre), junior Vanessa Lin (7th, epee), junior Charlotte Koenig (7th, foil), senior Kunling Tong (7th, sabre), sophomore Lev Ermakov (8th, sabre), senior Rachel Koo (8th, foil), freshman Aidan Lee (9th, foil) and junior Natalie Olsen (10th, sabre).
- Lin notched the largest improvement from a season ago, climbing 16 spots after finishing 23rd at the 2025 event. Olsen also made a noticeable improvement with a seven-spot jump after finishing 17th last season.
- Shen saw a five-spot gain after finishing seventh a season ago, while Ermakov matched his 2025 finish.
- Both the men's and women's foil crew qualified the most competitors for the final round of pool play with four apiece.
- Qualifiers for the 2026 NCAA Fencing Championships will be unveiled Tuesday, Mar. 10. A fencer's performance at regionals will have a direct impact on their chance at qualifying for the NCAA Championship, as both the regular season resumé and placing at the regional meet will be considered when the field is selected.
