DURHAM, N.C. – Former Duke men's tennis doubles All-America Theo Winegar continued his Wimbledon success Saturday with a second round victory. Winegar and doubles partner Jean-Julien Rojer upset No. 9 seed Hugo Nys and Edouard Roger-Vasselin to march on to the third round.Â
Playing at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, Winegar secured the upset with a 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (10-6) victory. With the opening set even at each game until 5-5, Rojer and Winegar broke and held to take it. The second set was quite similar, but neither side could break and the two headed to the tiebreaker. Rojer and Winegar were even at 2-2 in the tiebreaker before Nys and Roger-Vasselin snuck ahead 4-2. Rojer and Winegar narrowed the gap to 4-3 and 6-5, but Nys and Roger-Vasselin held on for the set.
The deciding set repeated the second and headed back to the tiebreaker. With a 3-3 tie, Rojer and Winegar captured the next three points to go up 6-3. Nys and Roger-Vasselin answered with consecutive points to trail just 6-5. Rojer and Winegar took control from there with three straight points to lead 8-5 before closing out the victory.
In the third round the two will face No. 6 seed Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic.
