No. 6 Duke Grinds Out 1-0 Win at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. – An early goal by junior Ashley Stockdale and some stellar second-half defense, including a pair of defensive stances in the final minute, proved to be the difference, as No. 6 Duke (2-0) grinded out a 1-0 victory at Richmond (1-1) in Sunday afternoon non-conference field hockey action.

The swarming Blue Devil defense held the home team without a shot attempt for over 29 minutes in the second half before the Spiders earned two penalty corners in the final 50 seconds for a chance at an equalizer. Duke denied Richmond's bid to send the contest into extra time, however, blocking both shots before running out the clock to preserve the one-goal triumph.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Duke netted the first goal of the game less than two minutes into the opening frame off the stick of Stockdale. After earning a penalty corner, senior Madison Beach sent a shot towards the cage, which Stockdale redirected into the back right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead at 1:42 mark. Junior Callie Rogers, who provided the stick stop, got the secondary assist.
The Blue Devils created a few more offensive opportunities in the first as they earned two more corners and produced a couple more shots on goal. The Spider defense stood tall, though, with keeper Amanda Cimillo collecting a pair of saves.
Richmond threatened early in the second quarter and earned a penalty corner at the 10:51 mark. The Spiders got off three shots during the set piece, but they were to no avail as the Blue Devils turned aside each attempt.
The sides traded possession across the remainder of the period. Richmond outshot Duke, 4-3, during the 15 minutes but neither team was able to create much of a quality scoring chance. At the break, Duke maintained a 1-0 lead.
Duke was aggressive coming out of the locker room, peppering the Spider defense with six shots while not allowing an attempt during the third stanza. Junior Julia Boehringer (2) and sophomore Shae Wozniak (1) created quality scoring chances getting shots on net, but Cimillo remained up to the task denying each one at the doorstep.
The final period was a frenetic 15-minute session as Richmond looked to level the score, while Duke sought to gain some breathing room on the scoreboard. The fourth quarter was without a shot attempt until the Spiders were awarded a penalty corner at 59:19.
Tested for the first time in the second half, the Blue Devils stood tall on the set piece and blocked the attempt. However, Richmond earned a second penalty corner with just over 30 seconds remaining. Duke remained steadfast and delivered a final defensive stance, locking down the gritty win.

GAME NOTES:

Duke improves to 25-7 all-time in season opening weekends under head coach Pam Bustin. The Blue Devils increase their record to 27-6-1 in the all-series against Richmond and move to 11-3-2 overall on the road against the Spiders.
Stockdale tallied her third marker of the season and the second game winner of her career. She needs just one more one goal to match her total from all of 2025.
Rogers notched her first assist as a Blue Devil and just the third of her collegiate career. The junior transfer dished out two helpers during her sophomore season at Maryland.
Junior goalkeeper Kaiya Chepow collected one save and posted her fifth clean sheet as a Blue Devil.
Duke's defense allowed just two total shots in the second half during opening weekend. The Blue Devils held William & Mary without an attempt after halftime in Friday's season opener (45 total minutes of game action extending to the second quarter) and prevented the Spiders from getting a shot off for the first 29:19 of the second half Sunday.

Duke travels to The Bay State to compete in the annual ACC/B1G Challenge. The interconference event - hosted by Boston College - will be played in Newton, Massachusetts.
The Blue Devils will square off against Northwestern (Sept. 4) and Maryland (Sept. 6) at the Field Hockey Complex.
