NEWTON, Mass. – No. 6 Duke gave No. 1 Northwestern all it could handle Friday afternoon, but a Sol Martinez Vivo goal in the seventh minute of overtime lifted the Wildcats to a 4-3 victory in non-conference field hockey action.

After trailing 1-0 at the end of the first quarter, the Blue Devils (2-1) used a stellar second period to surge in front, 3-1, at the break. Duke continued to keep Northwestern (3-0) at bay for much of the second half, but the Wildcats scored three goals over the final 21 minutes of regulation and overtime to rally for the win.

Three different Blue Devils found the back of the net with juniors Ashley Stockdale and Callie Rogers, along with graduate student Alaina McVeigh each scoring goals. McVeigh added an assist to finish with a team-high three points, with junior Julia Boehringer also providing a helper.

Junior goalkeeper Kaiya Chepow had a career day in the cage for the Blue Devils, with a personal-best 10 saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Northwestern's offense came out aggressive, controlling most of the possession during the opening 15 minutes and getting three shots on goal. Chepow turned aside the first two attempts, but Ashley Sessa was able to sneak one across the line for a 1-0 lead at 10:08.
The Blue Devils ushered a quick response just over a minute later, leveling the score at 1-1 in the 12th minute off the stick of Stockdale – her fourth of the season. After getting a pass from graduate student Philine Klas, Stockdale dribbled past a couple defenders and ripped a shot from just inside the top of the circle and into the bottom left corner at the 11:25 mark.
Duke struck early in the second period and took a 2-1 lead after converting on a penalty corner. The Blue Devils used some trickery on the set piece, with McVeigh redirecting a low-wrister by Boehringer into the right-back corner of the cage.
The Blue Devils continued to put pressure on the Northwestern defense, earning four more penalty corners. Duke cashed in on one of these additional set pieces late in the stanza, with Rogers ripping a shot from the right side for her first career goal. McVeigh provided the assist, as Duke stretched its advantage to 3-1 with 40 seconds left in the opening half.
Chepow was equally as impressive on the defensive end with four more saves, including huge back-to-back stops on shots by Olivia Bent-Cole and Sessa late in the frame to keep the Blue Devils in front.
The third quarter was tightly contested with Northwestern holding a slim, 4-3, edge in shots during the 15-minute period. Both team's goalies came up big, with Wildcat netminder Juliana Boon stopping Duke shots by McVeigh and sophomore Shae Wozniak. On the other side of the field, Chepow turned back a Northwestern shot following a corner, keeping the Blue Devil margin at two goals after 45 minutes.
Northwestern found its footing in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit in half with a goal by Isle Tromp to pull within one with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation. Tromp netted another at the 54:54 mark to level the score at 3-3. Both scores came via penalty corners.
Despite each side creating a quality chance down the stretch, neither team found the back of the cage over the final five minutes, sending the game into overtime.
The Wildcats completed their comeback in the seventh minute of the extra session, as Martinez Vivo poked one in to claim the 4-3 victory.

Duke drops to 2-1 on the year and falls to 10-8 all-time against Northwestern.
Duke is now 12-9 all-time in the ACC/B1G Challenge.
With her goal against Northwestern, Ashley Stockdale pushes her season total to four markers, matching her scoring total from a year ago.
Kaiya Chepow set a career high with 10 saves.
