Garces, Weber Collect ACC Weekly Awards

CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Duke sophomore Victoria Garces and freshman Sundara Weber were named the ACC Women's Cross Country Performer and Freshman of the Week, respectively, following their outstanding performances at the Meadows Invitational last weekend.
The Blue Devils sweep the awards following their first weekend of racing as the women took fourth of 17 teams on the 6k course at Princeton.
Garces captured her best finish of her career, taking second with a 6k personal-best time of 19:43.1. She beat her previous best time of 20:14 by 31 seconds. Running at the front of the pack from the opening gun, Garces sat in 15th place after the first mile. She made her biggest jump at the halfway point, moving up from 13th to fifth at the 4,200-meter mark. Garces took over the No. 2 spot in the final mile en route to breaking the 20-minute mark for the first time in her career.
One of four rookies in the Duke lineup, Weber turned in an excellent collegiate debut by clocking a 6k time of 20:09 for 11th place overall. The Sandwich, Illinois, native covered the first half of the race in just over 10 minutes and remained steady over the final 3,000 meters, including a 5:39 final mile.
The Blue Devils return to racing Friday, Oct. 2 at the Richmond Invitational.
