The Duke swimming and diving team officially begins the 2004-05 season Saturday with a tri-meet against Clemson and College of Charleston in Clemson, S.C. at 1 p.m.
The women will be led by junior Katie Ness as she returns to defend her ACC Championship in the 200 IM (2:00.27) and strive for her second trip to the NCAA Championships. Ness broke six individual school records and was a part of four more record-breaking relay teams during a breakout sophomore campaign last season. Sophomore Jackie Rodriguez and junior Nora Stump are also expected to make significant contributions after ending last season on a strong note.
At last season's ACC Championships, the women's team was ahead of Clemson until the last day when the Tigers pulled ahead to finish in sixth place, giving the Blue Devils a seventh-place finish.
"We competed closely with Clemson last year at ACC's," Assistant Coach Lauren Hancock said. "It's exciting that we get a chance to compete against them right away. College of Charleston will also be a good opponent to start the year off with."
On the men's side, seniors Teddy Helfers, John Humphrey and diver Tim Hyer are the leading returnees for the Blue Devils. Helfers earned a personal best in the 500 freestyle at last year's ACC Championships, while Humphrey shattered school records in the 200 and 400 IM events with career bests at the conference championships. After battling an injury all last spring, Hyer returns to the diving board to improve on his impressive sophomore campaign in 2002-03.
"This will be a good race for the men," Hancock said. "Clemson has some really strong swimmers which will give the team a good first look at what they're capable of."
Following the meet Saturday, the Blue Devils have three weeks off before returning to action on October 30 at N.C. State.
