CHARLOTTESVILLE - In a battle of two top-10 ranked teams in Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday evening, the third-ranked Virginia Cavaliers defeated ninth-ranked Duke, 2-1, in women's soccer action at Klockner Stadium. The Blue Devils fall to 10-3, 3-1 in the ACC, while Virginia improves to 10-1-1, 3-1-1.
The first half was an outright battle in the midfield that allowed only four shots in the first 45 minutes of action, but Virginia would strike early in the second half. In the 51st minute, Noelle Keselica sent a ball into the corner that Kelly Hammond crossed. The ball went across the goal mouth to Shannon Foley who sent a one-time blast into the net.
Foley would strike again in the 77th minute to give the Cavaliers a 2-0 advantage. Lindsay Gusick found Foley making her run into the box. Foley then dribbled around the last remaining Duke defender and slid the ball past the charging Blue Devil keeper, freshman Allison Lipsher.
In the 88th minute, Duke would get one back as Casey McCluskey made a run into the box and shot just inside the post from 15 yards out. The goal for McCluskey was her 13th of the season and she now has 37 for her career.
"We played well and never gave up tonight," said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. "We made a couple of mistakes that hurt us, but it was a battle in the midfield for most of the game. Both teams played hard and scrapped all night.
Overall, Virginia outshot Duke 9-5 on the evening, which marked a season-low shots for the Blue Devils. Christina de Vries needed to make just one save for Virginia, while Lipsher made three for Duke.
The Blue Devils don't have much time to relax as they have a big week at home hosting N.C. State on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., Clemson on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Virginia Tech on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
