DURHAM, N.C. - It all came down to the wire Saturday afternoon as the Duke women overtook East Carolina 123-120 after a stunning come-from-behind victory in the 400 freestyle relay and a blazing anchor leg swum by junior Nora Stupp. Two points separated the Blue Devils and Pirates going into the final event and just one-tenth of a second separated first and second place with Duke finishing the event in 3:33.81 to capture the relay and meet win. Alison Sundberg, Danielle Spearman and Anna Rogers swam the first three legs of the event to set Stupp up for the win.
The meet also opened with a relay win for the women, as Michelle Aristeo, Jackie Rodriguez, Katie Ness and Julia Lewis earned the 400 medley win in 3:53.63, beating Duke's previous season-best time by nearly three seconds.
All four women earned wins in individual events to further contribute to the Blue Devil point total. Rodriguez took first in the 1000 freestyle, while Ness secured first place in the 200 butterfly, as well as a second-place finish in the 200 individual medley behind ECU's Diane Parker. Lewis dominated the sprint freestyle events, taking first in both the 50 (24.26) and 100 (52.90) races. Aristeo made her mark in the 200 backstroke, finishing first in a time of 2:05.83
The women continued to dominate off the diving boards as Patti Frost nabbed the win in the three-meter event to earn first place for the first time this season.
The men's competition was equally close, with just one point separating the two teams heading into the final event, the 400 freestyle relay, and less than a tenth of a second separated first and second place. Despite a late surge from anchor swimmer Ryan Packer, the Blue Devils could not catch East Carolina or its anchorman Gavin Stark. Duke took second in the relay in 3:09.10, just a heartbeat behind the Pirates at 3:08.63, to drop the meet by a narrow 124-118 mark.
David Peck, Kevin Arthofer, John Humphrey and Ryan Packer captured the win in the 400 medley relay in 3:28.28. Humphrey also earned the win in the 200 butterfly in 1:55.24, just two-tenths of a second ahead of ECU's Matt Donohue.
The Blue Devils swept the top three spots in the 1000 freestyle with Teddy Helfers, Cooper Moore and Andy Storm placing first, second and third, respectively. Helfers and Moore repeated their first and second-place finishes in the 500 freestyle event, this time being joined by Jay Ashenfelter to round out the top three finishers.
Tim Hyer dove into first-place in the three-meter event with a score of 307.35 after finishing third in the one-meter dive.
The Blue Devils return to action Tuesday at North Carolina at 5 p.m.
