The Duke men's and women's swimming and diving teams travel to nearby Chapel Hill on Tuesday for a dual meet against ACC rival North Carolina. The competition is set to start at 5:00 p.m. in the Koury Natatorium.
The women's team (2-2, 0-2) picked up their second victory of the season Saturday at home against East Carolina with a stunning finish in the 400 freestyle relay. Two points separated the Blue Devils and Pirates going into the final event and just one-tenth of a second separated first and second place with Duke finishing the event in 3:33.81 to capture the relay and meet win. Alison Sundberg, Danielle Spearman and Anna Rogers swam the first three legs of the event to set Nora Stupp up for the win.
The men's team (1-3, 0-2) dropped a close contest to East Carolina Saturday, despite a number o fstrong performances. David Peck, Kevin Arthofer, John Humphrey and Ryan Packer captured the win in the 400 medley relay in 3:28.28, followed by an individual win by Humphrey in the 200 butterfly in 1:55.24. The Blue Devils also swept the top three spots in the 1000 freestyle with Teddy Helfers, Cooper Moore and Andy Storm placing first, second and third, respectively. Helfers and Moore repeated their first and second-place finishes in the 500 freestyle event, this time being joined by Jay Ashenfelter to round out the top three finishers.
The 15th-ranked North Carolina women's team swept dual meets from No. 24 Virginia Tech and Richmond while the No. 11-rated Tar Heel men's squad fell to seventh-ranked Minnesota while defeating Virginia Tech in action Saturday at Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heel women improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the ACC with the dual meet sweep while the Carolina men are now 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
In addition to impacting the conference standings, Tuesday's meet between Duke and North Carolina will be worth a total of two points in the Carlyle Cup, the all-sports competition between the rival schools. One point will be awarded for the winner of each of the men's and the women's meets. The Blue Devils and Tar Heels are currently at 3-3.
