DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke Swimming & Diving opened its 2005-06 season at home Saturday by splitting action against Atlantic Coast conference foe N.C. State and William & Mary. N.C. State topped both men's and women's teams, pulling out a narrow eight-point victory over the women, 125.5-117.5, but both Blue Devil teams downed William & Mary, as the women led 161-82, and the men won 143-94. Duke's men fell to N.C. State, 161-77.
“It was an exciting day,” said head coach Dan Colella. “We knew for the men that William & Mary was coming in here hoping to knock us off, and they didn't. We saw a lot of really smart performances today. We knew it would be a war with N.C. State. We knew it would go down to the last relay, and the 200 breaststroke really solidified the chances of that happening. I am very proud of the way everyone performed.”
The women's competition with N.C. State was heated throughout the entire meet. The deciding points came down to the final 400 freestyle relay, with the Blue Devils trailing just five points and needing a first-place finish to win the meet. The foursome of freshman Katie Bieze and seniors Nora Stupp, Alison Sundberg and Julia Lewis put up a hard fight but finished 0.26 seconds behind N.C. State's group, just missing the winning spot.
A trio of Blue Devil women won individual events, and senior Katie Ness collected a pair of titles in the 200 IM and 200 backstroke. Lewis tied with William & Mary's Megan Sculley for the 50 freestyle win, while junior Jackie Rodriguez topped the 200 breaststroke. On the men's side, senior Andy Storm also won the 200 breaststroke.
Duke had a successful day on the diving board, garnering five top-three finishes among the men's and women's one and three-meter dives. Freshman Nick Campisano led the group of Blue Devil divers, posting an NCAA Zone Championship qualifying score of 303.37 on the one-meter board. Campisano will now have the opportunity to compete at the Zone Championships March 10-12 in search of a bid to the NCAA Championships.
“I thought our divers did an unbelievable job today,” said diving coach Andy Scott. “They really stepped up and gave us a chance. They put us in position to have a shot at winning at the end of the meet.”
Freshman Lauren Gonzalez, recently coming off a recovery from a neck injury, placed second on both the one and three-meter boards to lead the Blue Devil women.
Duke returns to action Sat., Oct. 22, when the men host Wilmington, and the women host both Wilmington and Richmond at 2 p.m. Both men and women enter the contest with a 1-1 record after Saturday's meet.
