DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke women's swimming and diving team avenged two losses from the 2004-05 season, defeating UNC Wilmington, 136-107, and Richmond, 129-111, Saturday. The men's team only competed against Wilmington, falling, 151-90 in the Blue Devils' second of two straight home contests. Duke's women improve to 3-1 after two meets in the 2005-06 campaign, while the men are 1-2.
“We knew having lost last year that it was going to be close today,” said head coach Dan Colella. “We were excited to come off our last meet and put in a really great week of training. We are making progress not only in our racing, but also in the energy we are showing on the sideline and our team focus.”
The diving teams earned seven top-three finishes in the men's and women's one and three-meter dives. Freshman Nick Campisano, who qualified for the NCAA Zone Championships last week on the one-meter board, repeated Saturday on the three-meter board with a qualifying mark of 321.50, finishing second to Wilmington's Dean Berman, who competed at NCAA's last year. Campisano will perform on both events at the zone championships March 10-12 in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA finals.
Freshman Lauren Gonzalez earned her first collegiate win as she and junior Patti Frost teamed up to capture the first two spots in the one-meter dive. The pair topped Richmond in both events and finished behind one Wilmington competitor on the three-meter board.
“We did exactly what we needed to do today to come away with a win,” said diving coach Andy Scott. “This group is very good about focusing their energy on competition and diving well in the meet regardless of what has happened in practice the week before. I was very pleased with how they did today.”
For the second straight meet, the women's 400 medley relay team won the opening event to net early points for the Blue Devils. Senior Katie Ness again collected a pair of individual titles, winning the 200 IM and the 200 backstroke. In the 200 backstroke, sophomore Danielle Spearman and freshman Erin Frizzell tailed Ness to grab the second and third-place spots.
“Katie did a great job, doubling in the 200 IM and backstroke,” said Colella. “The 200 backstroke was a pivotal event for us, and I was very proud of the way Katie, Danielle and Erin made the 1-2-3 sweep at a point when the score was less than a 10-point difference.”
Junior Jackie Rodriguez won the 200 breaststroke for the second week in a row and didn't finish below second place in the three individual events in which she competed, taking second in both the 500 and 1000 freestyle.
On the men's side, three individuals earned titles. Senior Andy Storm repeated as the 200 breaststroke champion with a season-best time of 2:10.06 while finishing second in the 1000 freestyle. Sophomore Scott Champagne led all other competitors in the 200 IM, swimming a season-best 1:57.22.
The men's team also completed a sweep of the top three spots, finishing first, second and third in the 500 freestyle. Sophomore Matt Rinehart won the event, followed by junior Jay Ashenfelter and Champagne.
The Blue Devils will take a break next weekend before heading to Maryland Nov. 5 for a 2 p.m. double-Atlantic Coast Conference contest against Maryland and Miami.
