FAIRFAX, VA. ? On the second of three days of the annual Patriot Invitational Saturday, the Duke women's swimming and diving team slipped to a second-place standing, while the men held on to fourth place. Yale pulled ahead in the women's competition, where the Bulldogs hold a 530-487 lead over the Blue Devils. On the men's side, Duke sits in fourth with 257 points. Both men and women are competing against 10 other teams.
In her first 400 IM race this season, senior Nora Stupp topped the preliminaries, swimming a 4:34.10, and then knocked over two seconds off that time in the finals to place third, just five-tenths of a second outside of first place. Sophomore Amy Brown swam a 4:38.5 to earn a fifth-place finish in the event. Sophomore Scott Champagne also had a successful 400 IM, finishing in 4:07.25 and fifth place.
Senior Katie Ness continued her winning ways in the 100 butterfly, topping the competition with a time of 55.98, just shy of the meet record of 55.52 she set three years ago. In the 200 freestyle, freshman Emily Kelly and sophomore Danielle Spearman went three-five with Kelly finishing in 1:53.52 and Spearman swimming a career-best 1:54.9.
Junior Jackie Rodriguez continued to be a strong fighter for the Blue Devils, taking second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.31. Ness fell below first place for the first time this season in the 100 backstroke but still finished third, just ahead of Spearman, who came in fourth.
Freshman Nick Campisano led the three-meter diving preliminaries, scoring a 307.35, over 16 points ahead of his closest competitor. Junior Kevin Arthofer and senior Billy Pearce both had top-eight finishes in the finals, with Arthofer coming in eighth in the 100 breaststroke and Pearce in seventh in the 100 backstroke.
The Blue Devils will wrap up the three-day event on Sunday. Preliminaries for the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and 1650 freestyle will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the women's one-meter diving preliminaries and finals and men's three-meter finals at noon. The final races for the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and the 400 freestyle relay will begin at 5 p.m.
