
Brown Advances After First Day of Southern Intercollegiates

Athens, Ga. - Christopher Brown advanced to the second round of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga. on Friday with a win in straight sets. Brown is one of four Blue Devils who will compete in the second round after three received byes in the first round.
Brown is competing in the Division II singles bracket and defeated Ryan Farlow from Mississippi State in his first match to advance. After a 6-3 win in his first set, Brown put Farlow away with a convincing 6-1 victory in the second set to close out the match.
Also in action on Friday was Ned Samuelson who took on Georgia's Colin Purcell in a Division I singles match. Purcell, playing on his home court, defeated Samuelson in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-2, to advance on to the second round.
Three Blue Devils received byes in the first round. Ludovic Walter, who was ranked No. 2 in the preseason Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) singles rankings, is the top seed this weekend and will play his first match at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. He will face Florida State's Sam Chang who defeated Serguei Boulanov of Stetson with a 6-3, 6-3 straight set win.
Joey Atas, a junior transfer from Ohio State, and Jonathan Stokke also received a first round bye in the tournament. Atas, ranked No. 29 in the preseason ITA rankings, is the third seed in the tournament and will play at 11 a.m. on Saturday. He will face Vanderbilts Andy Mack who defeated Ben Pauluhn of Furman in a close match. Mack won the first set 6-4, but lost 6-7 (4) in the second set. He came back to take the third set by a count of 6-1 to move on to the next round. Stokke, ranked No. 53 in the ITA rankings, is the sixth seed and will play his first singles match at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. He will take on Juan Pablo DiCesare of Ole Miss who also had a bye in the first round.
The two doubles teams competing for Duke both received top-8 seeds in the tournament. As the fifth seed, Atas and Stokke advanced to the second round after an 8-3 victory over East Tennessee State's duo of Insaurralde and Picardo. Their next match will be on Sunday. They will take on Tennessee's Cameron and Henzel, who won an 8-4 match against the Citadel's Dosseter and Eason. Samuelson and Walter earned the eighth seed heading in and lost a close 9-7 match to an ACC duo in Georgia Tech's Blackmon and Rath.
The tournament is being held at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. There will be one round of doubles played each of the first three days with the final two matches to take place on Monday. The first round of singles competition took place on Friday. There will be two rounds played on Saturday and Sunday with the championship taking place on Monday.
