
No. 8 Duke Cruises to 7-0 win over No. 66 Old Dominion in Season Opener

Durham, N.C. - No. 8 Duke earned a 7-0 shutout victory over No. 66 Old Dominion in its first dual meet of the season on Sunday at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. The Blue Devils swept the singles and doubles matches against the Monarchs who fell to 5-1 and had not lost a match this season entering the dual meet against Duke.
Duke opened up the dual match with three wins in doubles play. Ludovic Walter and Joey Atas dominated their match against No. 33 Henrique Cancado and Eidy Igarashi with a shutout victory, 8-0, in the No. 2 doubles. Peter Rodrigues and Ned Samuelson were victorious at the No. 3 position as they defeated Aleksandr Seleznev and Rodrigo Souza, 8-4. The No. 1 doubles was a close match with Jonathan Stokke and Stephen Amritraj edging out Nathaniel Grover and Harel Srugo in a tiebreaker. The Duke pair tied the score at 8-8 and then won 7-3 in the breaker to take the match.
In singles, Kiril Dimitrov was impressive in his first career dual match. He faced Grover in the No. 6 singles match and won in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 to improve to 3-1 at the collegiate level. Christopher Brown improved to 7-4 on the year with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Souza at the No. 5 singles position. Walter, Atas and Rodrigues also won in straight sets. Walter, the ninth-ranked player in the country, won his first set 6-2 and came back to win the second, 7-5 in the No. 1 singles against Srugo. The win gave Walter 107 for his career and moved him into a tie for sixth with Chris Pressley on Duke's career singles wins list. Atas played in the No. 3 spot for the Blue Devils and clinched the team's victory with a win in a tiebreaker in the second set, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5), against No. 90 Igarashi. Rodrigues won the No. 4 match for Duke with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Seleznev. In the final match of the day, No. 20 Stokke closed out the shutout for the Blue Devils with a three-set win at the No. 2 position. He defeated Cancado 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 to pick up his team-high 16th win of the season.
“I thought we played with a lot of energy for our first match of the season,” said Head Coach Jay Lapidus. “Old Dominion is a great team and their top four players are a challenge for us. It was good that they pushed us in some spots so that we can see where we are as a team.”
Duke will be back at home on Friday, Feb. 3 when they host a dual match with No. 4 Illinois at 6 p.m. in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
