DURHAM, N.C. - Freshman Aaron Carpenter posted two wins on Wednesday to qualify for the main draw of ITA Regional action, and will join five of his teammates in main-draw singles competition on Thursday at Duke.
Carpenter defeated Taylor Ferrier of Gardner-Webb, 6-3, 6-3, and Rashko Patnikov of Longwood, 6-1, 7-6 (4) to qualify for the main draw, and is set to meet Sergi Arumi of Virginia Commonwealth at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday.
Also in action on Wednesday, were freshman David Lue and juniors Alex Stone and Ned Samuelson. Lue fell to Travis Sandlant of East Tennessee State (6-4, 6-4) in his first match of the day, while Stone and Samuelson posted one victory each before falling out of contention.
Stone saw two tough matchups on the day, as both of the junior's matches would require three sets. Stone defeated Andrew Brasseaux of Wake Forest (7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-4) before falling to East Tennessee State's Predrag Burmazovic (3-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5)).
Samuelson posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Kevin Beard of Elon in his first match, later falling to East Tennessee State's Alex Ahlgren, 6-1, 6-3.
Junior David Goulet joins Carpenter in being the first to play on Thursday, as he is set to square off against Anuwat Dalodom of Elon at 10:45 a.m. Freshman Dylan Arnould, sophomore Kiril Dimitrov and seniors Peter Rodrigues and Joey Atas all receive first-round byes in the main draw singles bracket. Doubles play is set to begin at 4 p.m.
Mideast Regional action will run through Sunday, Oct. 27. All Duke matches will take place at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Stadium until Saturday when all competition moves to the University of North Carolina.
