DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke swimming and diving teams will travel to Wilmington, N.C., on Saturday for their first dual meets of the 2006-07 season, as the men square off against UNC-Wilmington and the women face off against UNC-Wilmington and Richmond.
“The start of the season is always exciting and with so many new swimmers and divers it should be interesting to see how they perform this weekend,” said Duke head coach Dan Colella. “I have no doubt that the meet will be competitive for both the men and women.”
Last season, the men were defeated by UNC-W and the women came away victorious, defeating UNC-W and Richmond. The women posted a 136-107 win over UNC-W and 129-111 victory over Richmond in 2005-06, as the men fell to UNC-W, 151-90.
“Coming off the loss to the UNC-W men last year I know our Duke men are looking forward to tomorrow's event,” said Colella. “The University of Richmond had a great end of the year and added some real talent, so I anticipate a real challenge from them. If we stand up and perform the way we have been training it should be a great weekend.”
Colella is entering his second season as Blue Devil head coach and will join Dawn Chuck and diving coach Andy Scott in welcoming 24 freshmen to a team that will be led by four senior men and five senior women in 2006-07.
The Blue Devils are coming off a 2005-06 season that saw the men's squad go 3-6 (1-4 ACC) and the women's squad go 5-6 (1-5 ACC). Both squads posted an Atlantic Coast Conference dual-meet victory for the first time in a number of years at the same meet in November at Maryland. At the 2006 ACC Championships, the women's team established three Duke records and the men threw out two, on their way to 10th and ninth place finishes, respectively.
Saturday's meet in Wilmington will begin at 2 p.m. Duke's first home meet will take place on Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. as Duke takes on Maryland and N.C. State in ACC matchups.
