
No. 9 Duke Falls to No. 4 Pepperdine 4-1 at National Indoor Semifinals

Seattle, Wash. - No. 9 Duke suffered a 4-1 defeat against No. 4 Pepperdine on Saturday in the USTA-ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship semifinals. The loss was only the second of the season for the Blue Devils, both coming against teams ranked in the top five of the FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
Duke was making its fourth appearance in the semifinals of National Indoors and first since 2001. For the first time in this year's tournament, the Blue Devils fell behind early as the Waves took the doubles point with a pair of wins. In the No. 1 doubles match, Pepperdine's Scott Doerner and Andre Begemann handed Duke's No. 9 Joey Atas and Jonathan Stokke their first loss of the dual match season. The 8-5 setback drops Atas and Stokke to 3-1 in dual matches and 14-4 overall. The Waves also took the No. 2 doubles match as No. 31 Pedro Rico and Ivor Lovrak won 8-4 against Stephen Amritraj and Peter Rodrigues.
In singles, Pepperdine increased its lead to 2-0 with a win at the No. 5 singles position. Begemann won in straight sets over Christopher Brown 6-3, 6-4. Duke cut the lead in half when No. 9 Ludovic Walter defeated Doerner in the No. 1 slot 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Walter is now tied for second with Rob Chess on Duke's career singles victories list with 112 wins. He is seven wins away from current Blue Devils' assistant coach, Ramsey Smith. Walter iimproved to 16-6 overall on the year and 6-1 in dual matches.
The final four singles matches all went to three sets. The Waves were able to come away with wins in the No. 2 and No. 6 matches to seal the victory. Rico, ranked No. 100 in the country, defeated Stokke, the 20th-ranked player, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Omar Altmann clinched the match with a win at No. 6. He defeated Ned Samuelson in a close match featuring two tiebreakers 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4).
Duke's road to the semifinals included wins over No. 8 Baylor, 4-3, and No. 1 Florida, 4-1. The Blue Devils will be back in action on Wednesday, March 8 when they head to Raleigh to face N.C. State at 2 p.m.
