
Atas and Goulet In Championship Match at Southern Intercollegiate Championships

ATHENS, G.A. - The Duke duo of senior Joey Atas and junior David Goulet have won five matches at the 38th annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships thus far and will play for the Division I Championship on Monday at host University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Two other Blue Devil doubles teams and five singles players also were in action in the tournament's main draws, while three singles players participated in back-draw action.
Atas and Goulet, the tournament's No. 1-seeded doubles team, defeated the No. 6-seeded duo of Martin Stiegwart and Anze Cevka (GSU) in the quarterfinals (8-2) to reach the semifinal match. The two then met M. Omerzel and Travis Hegleson (UGA) on Monday morning, coming away with a 9-8 (3) victory to reach the championship match. Atas and Goulet are scheduled to meet another University of Georgia team in John Isner and Luis Flores, the No. 2-seeded team in the tournament.
Also active in Division I doubles action, was the Duke duo of Peter Rodrigues and Alex Stone. After posting an opening-round win on Friday, the duo fell to Dias Doskarayer and RJ Nagel (USA), 8-2. Kiril Dimitrov and Aaron Carpenter posted two wins in the Division II doubles bracket and fell out of action one round short of the quarterfinals.
In the main draw of the Division I singles bracket, Rodrigues posted two two-set wins, eventually falling to No. 3 seed Luis Flores (UGA), 6-0, 7-6. Dimitrov posted four tournament wins, but fell in the quarterfinals to Flores, 6-4, 6-2.
The Division II singles bracket saw Carpenter post three two-set victories, as the freshman fell to Kaden Hensel of Tennessee, 6-1, 6-1. Goulet posted two two-set wins, later falling to Aleksander Seleznev of Old Dominion in three sets (6-1, 3-6, 6-2).
Atas, Stone and freshman David Lue were also in action this weekend, competing in singles back draws. Stone was unable to post a win, while Lue advanced as a result of a withdrawal but was then defeated. Atas went on to win his portion of the bracket, posting two consolation wins.
