CHARLOTTESVILLE and CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. ? Duke (7-8, 0-5 ACC) was handed its third and fourth straight losses on Saturday by Virginia (7-8, 2-2 ACC) in the afternoon and Virginia Tech (6-10, 1-3 ACC) at night. The Blue Devils were only able to win six of 20 matches throughout the entire day, but had a bright spot in redshirt freshman John Barone, who won both of his contests at 174 pounds.
The doubleheader road trip for Duke began at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Virginia's Memorial Gym. The Cavaliers got off to a quick start, winning the first three matches at the lower weight classes--- including a Duke forfeit at 133 pounds--- to go up 12-0.
Senior Daniel Shvartsman then won his seventh straight match at 141 pounds in an 8-3 decision over Virginia's Pat Riley. Duke had cut Virginia's lead to 12-3.
After 157-pound sophomore Addison Nuding lost a decision to Virginia's Mike Sewell, redshirt sophomore Aaron Glover came back late to win an overtime decision over the Cavaliers' Damian Johnson. Glover used a take down at the end of the third period and another takedown at the beginning of the first overtime to win 7-5.
At 174 pounds, Barone pinned Beau Fisher at 3:44 of their match. It was Barone's team-leading sixth fall of the season. Duke had pulled to within three points of Virginia at 15-12, but would be unable to get any closer. The Cavaliers recorded three straight victories, including two major decisions, to close out the meet and down the Blue Devils 26-12.
Duke then traveled to Christiansburg, Va., to take on Virginia Tech. The Hokies came into the meet winless as well in the ACC.
After swapping forfeits at 125 and 133 pounds, junior Wes Kuser gave the Blue Devils their first lead of the day when he won a 13-7 decision over the Hokies' Matt Rosen at 141 pounds. Kuser improved to 15-11 this year, and 2-2 in ACC matches.
Shvartsman would see his winning streak come to an end when he lost a 14-8 decision to Virginia Tech's Jonny Bonilla-Bowman. Shvartsman finished ACC regular season competition with an 11-7 overall record and a 3-2 in-conference mark.
Nuding and Glover lost back-to-back matches for the Blue Devils before Barone was able to come up with his second victory of the day, and third in a row overall. Barone won an 11-6 decision over one of the Hokies' best wrestlers in Steven Ratley. Barone is now 21-9 this year and 4-1 in the ACC. The win also cut the Duke deficit to 16-12, but once again the Blue Devils' opponent was able to win the last three matches--- including one pin--- and take the meet 26-12.
This season marks the second in a row that Duke has gone winless in ACC competition. Their ACC meet winless streak now stands at 11. The Blue Devils will look to redeem themselves at the ACC Tournament in Raleigh, N.C. on Sat., March 3.
Shvartsman continues to move up on the Blue Devils' career wins list. He currently ranks 10th with 83 career victories after his one on Saturday. Shvartsman is two wins behind Jake Cecere in 9th place, and 22 wins behind all-time leader Bradd Weber.
The Blue Devils will finish up the 2006-07 regular season on Sat., Feb. 17 in Cameron Indoor Stadium against in-state foe UNC-Greensboro. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and will feature three seniors--- Shvartsman, Patrick Keenum and Philip Wightman--- who will be wrestling in their last home meet at Blue Devils.
