CHIGAGO, Ill. - The No. 11 Duke men's tennis team edged 15th-ranked Stanford, 4-2, in Saturday's consolation round at the USTA/ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championships at the Midtown Tennis Club.
Stanford won the doubles point, but Duke rebounded in singles with wins from senior No. 80 Peter Rodrigues, sophomore No. 54 Kiril Dimitrov, junior David Goulet and freshman Aaron Carpenter.
With the score 3-2, Carpenter beat Paul Morrissey 7-6, 6-4 at the No. 6 spot to clinch the victory for the Blue Devils.
The win is Duke's first ever over Stanford in eight all-time meetings.
“We had a tough loss yesterday [versus Baylor] and I thought that the guys did a good job of coming back from that in today's match,” said Duke head coach Jay Lapidus. “We did a great job in singles and it came down to two freshmen, Dylan [Arnould] and Aaron at five and six, and they did a great job of coming through for us. We're happy to get through that one and we have one more tomorrow, so it would be great to come home with two wins.”
Duke (4-3, 0-0 ACC) will face the winner of tonight's Miami/Oklahoma State match on Sunday at 6:30 pm.
