DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 12 Duke men's tennis team cruised to a 7-0 victory over 64th-ranked Penn on Friday evening at Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. The Blue Devils improved to 3-2 on the season with the win, and handed the Quakers (1-3) their third straight loss.
Duke started out strong, sweeping the doubles to lead 1-0 going into singles competition. The duo of Ned Samuelson and David Goulet finished first, as the juniors never fell behind, eventually winning 8-5 over Jason Pinsky and Joseph Lok at the No. 2 spot. Clinching the match was the Blue Devil tandem of senior Joey Atas and freshman Dylan Arnould, as the two defeated Brandon O'Gara and Adam Schwartz, 8-5, at the No. 1 position.
At No. 3, senior Peter Rodrigues and junior Alex Stone combined for a victory in dramatic fashion. The duo fell behind 2-1 and stormed back to tie the score at two apiece. After six tie scores, Rodrigues and Stone dominated in the tiebreaker, going ahead 6-0 before allowing Penn a single point. The two went on defeat Jonathan Boym and Justin Fox, 9-8 (7-3).
The Blue Devils then took all six singles matches - all in straight sets - to post their first 7-0 shutout victory of the season, as 100th-ranked Atas (No. 1), No. 80 Rodrigues (No. 2), 54th-ranked sophomore Kiril Dimitrov (No. 3), No. 84 Arnould (No. 4), Goulet (No. 5) and freshman Aaron Carpenter (No. 6) all recorded singles victories on the night.
The Blue Devils will next travel to Chicago, Ill., for the USTA/ITA Men's Team Indoor Championship, held Feb. 16-19 at the Midtown Tennis Club. Duke received the No. 10 seed, announced earlier today, and will face seventh-seeded and eighth-ranked Baylor on Friday, Feb. 16 at 3 p.m.
