
Blue Devils Defeat Virginia Tech, 5-2, In Regular Season Finale

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The 16th-ranked Duke men's tennis team ended the regular season with a 5-2 win over 38th-ranked Virginia Tech at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Devils head into postseason play with a record of 15-8 (8-3 ACC), while the Hokies end their regular season with a mark of 12-11 (3-8 ACC).
Duke took the doubles point to go into singles competition with a 1-0 advantage, as junior Ned Samuelson and freshman Dylan Arnould defeated Albert Larregola and Yoann Re, 8-4, at the No. 2 position and senior Peter Rodrigues and sophomore Kiril Dimitrov combined for an 8-4 win over Akil Burgess and Brandon Corace at No. 3.
At the top doubles spot, the fifth-ranked duo of senior Joey Atas and junior David Goulet fell to 28th-ranked Nicolas Delgado and Pedro Graber, 9-8 (6).
Singles play saw the Blue Devils take the first two matches to increase their advantage to 3-0, as 69th-ranked Atas defeated Larregola, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot and 48th-ranked Kiril Dimitrov, overcame Delgado, 6-2, 6-4, at the top singles position.
The No. 4 contest went Virginia Tech's way, as Graber netted a 7-6, 6-4 win over Arnould, but Goulet earned the clinching point for Duke by edging Corace, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 5.
No. 115 Rodrigues and Re competed through three sets at the No. 3 spot, as Re earned a second point for the Hokies by winning 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.
In the final match, Tech's Ignaci Roca and junior Alex Stone squared off and split the first two sets, each earning a 7-6 finish. In the ten-point tiebreaker, Stone pulled ahead, winning 1-0 (10-6) to record Duke's final point.
“It was great to see the guys bounce back from a tough loss on Friday and get this win,” said Duke head coach Jay Lapidus. “Now we'll get to work this week on the practice courts and turn our attention to the ACC Tournament.”
Duke will begin ACC Tournament play next week in Cary, N.C., at the Cary Tennis Park, with the first round set for Thursday, April 19. The tournament will run through Sunday, April 22, with the championship match set for Sunday at 11 a.m.
