DURHAM, N.C. - Seniors Joey Atas and Peter Rodrigues and sophomore Kiril Dimitrov have been named to the 2007 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Tennis team, as was announced on Thursday by league officials.
The honor marks the second consecutive nod for Rodrigues and the first ever for Atas and Dimitrov, as Clemson and Duke paced all schools with three all-conference picks each. Miami, North Carolina, N.C. State, Virginia and Wake Forest received two nods apiece, while Florida State and Virginia Tech completed the 18-member unit with one selection each.
Atas currently ranks 105th in the nation and has been ranked in six straight FILA/ITA national singles listings, with a season-high ranking of 69th coming on April 3. The Baltimore, Md., native compiled a dual match record of 11-12 this season, including a mark of 6-5 versus ACC opponents. Atas combines with junior David Goulet to form the 10th-ranked doubles tandem in the country, as the two went 16-6 (7-4 ACC) in dual matches on the season.
Rodrigues leads Duke in singles wins with a record of 16-6, a mark that includes a 9-2 ledger against ACC foes. Currently ranked 99th in the nation, the Estoril, Portugal, native secured his 100th career singles win in Duke's 5-2 upset over rival North Carolina on April 10. Rodrigues has 101 wins going into postseason play, a total which ranks tied for ninth all-time at Duke.
Dimitrov has been the Blue Devils' top-ranked singles player all season, as he currently ranks 54th in the country. The Sofia, Bulgaria, native boasts a mark of 13-8 in dual matches on the year, a mark that includes a 7-4 record versus conference opponents and a 5-1 mark at the top singles position.
Dimitrov and Rodrigues have combined to form a prolific doubles tandem for Duke, as the two are second on the team in doubles victories with a mark of 11-1 (10-1 ACC).
Duke boasts a league-leading 66 all-time All-ACC selections, with the next closest school recording 62 (Clemson).
The Duke men's tennis team begins action at the ACC Championships on Friday as the No. 3 seed, as the Blue Devils take on the winner of Thursday's first round matchup between sixth-seeded Florida State and 11th-seeded Maryland. First serve for Friday's quarterfinal match is set for 3 p.m. at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
