DURHAM, N.C. - The 13th-ranked Duke men's tennis team will begin ACC Championship competition on Friday at Cary Tennis Park versus 19th-ranked Florida State in a No. 3 seed/No. 6 seed quarterfinal matchup. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
Duke (15-8, 8-3 ACC) received the No. 3 seed for the 2007 ACC Championships on Monday, as Virginia picked up the top overall seed after finishing the regular season with a perfect 11-0 record in conference action. Earning the No. 2 seed was North Carolina (21-2, 9-2 ACC), while Wake Forest (20-5, 7-4 ACC) received the No. 4 seed.
After a first round bye, Duke squares off against sixth-seeded Florida State, who defeated 11th-seeded Maryland, 4-0, in a first round matchup. In a meeting during the regular season, the Blue Devils defeated Florida State, 5-2, on March 30. The Blue Devils are 4-0 versus the Seminoles in ACC Tournament play, and control the all-time series with FSU, 20-5.
Duke has compiled a record of 40-6 in ACC Championship action and has won 12 championships, including the 2006 ACC Championship. Last year, Duke entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed and the Blue Devils defeated Virginia Tech and Miami to reach the championship match where they came back from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Virginia, 4-3, to take home the title.
Head coach Jay Lapidus owns 11 of Duke's 12 ACC Championship titles. Twelve titles rank second all-time in ACC history, while Lapidus' 11 titles also ranks second most of all-time.
The winner of Friday's match will advance to the ACC Championship semifinals to square off against the winner of a quarterfinal match between No. 2 seed North Carolina and No. 10 seed Virginia Tech. That semifinal will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Exclusive coverage of both the ACC Men's and Women's Tennis Championships will be broadcast live on the internet every day at www.ACCSelect.com from April 19-22, beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday and Friday, 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, and 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.
