COLUMBUS, Ohio ? The Duke diving team turned in a strong showing Friday evening in day one of competition at the Ohio State Invitational at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, with the men competing in the one-meter and the women in the three-meter.
Freshman Abby Johnston entered the final round of tonight's three-meter finals tied for first place with 2008 Olympian Christina Loukas of Indiana University, before hitting her toes on the diving board in her final dive to take third overall in the field of eight finalists with a 329.05. Johnston led another 2008 Olympian, Miami's Kelci Bryant, entering the final dive as well, but Bryant went on to take second behind Loukas in the event.
The Blue Devils were also represented in the three-meter preliminaries today by Julie Brummond in ninth with a score of 275.50, Jessica Lyden in 12th (271.10).
In the men's one-meter prelims, freshman Cody Kolodziejzyk turned in a 10th place performance with a score of 302.95, narrowly missing the finals.
“Abby had a great day and was in position to win tonight,” said diving coach Drew Johansen. “She is establishing herself as a player here in the NCAA as a freshman. It's exciting because she's performing as well as ever in a major meet, especially against two athletes who just competed in Beijing this summer.”
The men's squad will look for another good showing tomorrow on the three-meter, with representation from Kolodziejzyk and Shawn Hoffman in a field that will also include several Olympians. The women will be back in action on the one-meter board, while Sunday will feature the platform competition.
