Durham, N.C. ? The three players joining the Duke men's tennis program next fall have comprised the No. 4 overall recruiting class in the country according to tennisrecruiting.net.
David Holland,
Luke Marchese and
Torsten Wietoska have each signed national letters of intent to play for the Blue Devils next season. Holland and Marchese are both blue chip recruits while Wietoska was ranked the No. 1 player in the country in the TennisRPI rankings in 2006 and 2007.
"I think it is a great group of guys,” said associate head coach
Ramsey Smith. “They are three great tennis players and great kids. I think all three are high in potential and I can't wait to get them on campus.”
Holland is a five star, blue chip player out of Pennington, New Jersey. He is currently rated as the No. 12 player in the latest TennisRPI rankings (5/22) and No. 16 in the College Recruiting List rankings (5/27). He is the No. 1 rated player in New Jersey and the No. 3 player in the Middle Atlantic region. He has a 37-15 record over the past year, including a 17-2 mark against five-star players and a 15-0 record against players ranked 4-star or below. He won the singles championship at the ITF International Hard Court Championships in Allenwood, N.J. back in August as well as the L4 Sectional B18 Championship in Wexford, Pa. in January, 2007.
In his junior year at Princeton Day School, Holland went undefeated at 22-0, won the prep state singles championship and was named a National High School All-American. It was his second straight state title as he went 17-0 to claim the championship in his sophomore season. He was 20-2 as a freshman, losing in the state championship match.
Marchese is a five star, blue chip player out of Summit, New Jersey. He is ranked as the second best player in the state behind Holland and is No. 6 in the Middle Atlantic region. He was ranked as high as No.27 in the TennisRPI rankings (5/27) and is No. 25 on the latest College Recruiting Lists (5/27). He has a 23-14 record over the past year, including an 8-1 mark against five-star players. He won the singles championship at the USTA National Opens in Waco, Texas in February, 2007.
Wietoska comes to Duke from Van der Meer Tennis Academy in Hilton Head Island, S.C. He originally is from Leer, Germany. He was ranked as high as No. 1 in the TennisRPI rankings on May 3, 2007 and was No. 2 on the College Recruiting List on March 13, 2007. He was the U16 German Champion in 2005. He has also won championships at the ITF Baton Rouge and ITF Destin tournaments in 2006.
