Durham, N.C. ? The Duke men's tennis team announced its 2008-09 schedule on Tuesday with the Blue Devils opening the year on Sept. 20-22 at the Southern Collegiates in Athens, Ga.
Duke will compete in four tournaments during the fall season, including the Southern Collegiates, UVA Fall Invitational, ITA All-American tournament and ITA Regionals.
The 2009 dual match schedule begins Jan. 22 with a home match against Elon at 6 p.m. The Blue Devils will also host Virginia Commonwealth at home on Jan. 24 before entering a stretch of six straight road contests.
The first road match will be against Florida State in the first round of ITA Team Indoors on Jan. 31. Duke will head to State College, Pa., which was one of 15 host sites chosen for the national tournament. The host school Penn State will face Oklahoma State in the first round with the winners of the two matches squaring off the next day.
The other five road matches will all be against teams who finished ranked in the top 35 in 2007-08, including No. 4 Texas on March 11. The Blue Devils will also travel to face Illinois, Notre Dame, TCU and Rice.
Duke opens the 2009 conference slate at home against N.C. State on March 18 at 1:30 p.m. The first six ACC matches for the Blue Devils will all be held at Ambler Tennis Stadium in Durham, N.C. The first ACC road match will be against the national runner-up and defending ACC champions Virginia in Charlottesville on April 3 at 3 p.m.
The annual Carlyle Cup match with rival North Carolina will take place Wednesday, April 8 at 3:30 p.m. in Chapel Hill, N.C. Duke will wrap up the regular season with weekend matches at Georgia Tech and Clemson April 10 and April 12.
The schedule features matches against 17 teams that were ranked in the final 2007-08 ITA team rankings. Two teams were ranked in the top five while six teams were ranked in the top-20.
The 2009 ACC Tournament will be held in Cary, N.C. April 16-19.
