DURHAM, N.C. ? The Duke men's tennis team will divide up for two tournaments this weekend with six players going to Charlottesville, Va. on Friday and four heading to Chapel Hill, N.C.
Six players have been invited to the inaugural UVA Ranked Plus One Invitational, which is hosted by the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. The tournament features a field of 11 teams with 18 ranked singles players and three ranked doubles teams.
Duke's two ranked singles players, No. 39 Reid Carleton and No. 103 Kiril Dimitrov, are among the competitors. Carleton will be the No. 3 seed in the A-1 bracket this weekend and earn a first round bye. He posted a 4-1 record last weekend and made the singles semifinals at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga. Dimitrov is a 5-8 seed in the A-2 bracket and also has a first round bye. Last weekend he lost his first round match to a higher-ranked opponent but finished strong with two consolation victories.
Also in the A-1 bracket are Alain Michel and Torsten Wietoska. Michel is 1-1 on the year and is scheduled to take on Igor Ogrizek of Radford in the first round. Wietoska is also 1-1 and will square off against Simon Childs of Louisville.
Joining Dimitrov in the A-2 bracket will be Dylan Arnould and Jared Pinsky. Arnould posted a 1-2 singles record last weekend and will begin this tournament against Francois VanImpe of Nebraska. Pinsky went 1-1 to start the year and will face Alex Ahlgren of East Tennessee State.
The six players at the UVA Invitational will all compete in doubles. Dimitrov and Michel will team up in the A-1 doubles bracket. The Duke pair advanced to the semifinals in doubles in Athens last weekend with a 3-1 record. They open this weekend against Virginia's David Nguyen and Reese Milner. Carleton and Pinsky will play together for the first time in the A-2 doubles against the 26th-ranked doubles team of Simon Childs and Austen Childs of Louisville. In the A-3 doubles, Arnould and Wietoska will take on Nebraska's Calin Paar and Francois VanImpe.
Four players will head down the road to the University of North Carolina for the UNC Fall Invitational. David Lue and Aaron Carpenter lead the group after strong performances in Georgia last weekend. Lue lost in the finals of his singles bracket after winning four matches. Carpenter fell in the semifinals of his draw and also posted a 4-1 record.
Also competing for the Blue Devils will be Luke Marchese and Christopher Price. Marchese won two matches last weekend while Price went 1-1.
