ATHENS, Ga. - Freshman Henrique Cunha upset the No. 2 player in the country on Sunday at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga.
Cunha, playing just his second collegiate match, knocked off John Patrick Smith of Tennessee in the round of 32. Cunha got off to a great start, winning the first set 6-4. Smith took the second set, 6-3, to force a super tiebreaker. In the end it was the freshman from Jau, Brazil coming out on top with a 10-8 victory.
Cunha moved on to the round of 16 where he earned another super tiebreaker win, 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8), over Elliot Potvin of Georgia Tech. Cunha advances to the quarterfinals where he will face Vijay Paul of Vanderbilt Monday at 9 a.m.
Sophomore Torsten Wietoska also faced a top five opponent, but came up short against No. 5 Guillermo Gomez of Georgia Tech 6-1, 6-2. The other Duke player in the Division I singles bracket was No. 29 Reid Carleton. The No. 5 seed in the tournament, Carleton suffered a 6-1, 3-6, 1-0(6) loss to Vanderbilt's Ryan Lipman in the round of 32.
Three Blue Devils remained in the Division II singles bracket at the start of the day. Sophomore David Holland moved on to the round of 16 with a walkover. He is set to take on Georgia State's Henry Mangin, who knocked out Duke's David Lue in the first round.
Luke Marchese won his first match of the day, 6-4, 6-4 over Romain Vieillard of ABAC. Marchese then fell to Najal Stehe of Stetson, 7-6 (7), 6-4 in the round of 32. Aaron Carpenter lost his first match against Jackson Moore of Georgia State, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(9).
All remaining Division III singles matches and all doubles contests have been cancelled due to weather limiting the number of courts. Play will continue Monday morning at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia.
