ATHENS, Ga. - Monday was the final day of competition at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga. with over half the matches cancelled due to weather moving the tournament indoors all four days.
Two Duke players competed on Monday as part of only 11 total matches being played. Several schools withdrew players from the tournament the final two days.
Freshman Henrique Cunha won his fourth straight match to start his career before falling in the semifinals of the Division I bracket. He defeated Vanderbilt's Vijay Paul in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 to start the day. He then faced his second top 10 opponent of the tournament, losing to No. 5 Guillermo Gomez of Georgia Tech 6-2, 6-3.
Sophomore David Holland had a similar finish, winning his first match and falling in his second. He earned a 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 (1) victory over Georgia State's Henry Mangin in the round of 16. He advanced to the quarterfinals where he lost to Mercer's Peter Tauchner 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (7).
Next up for the Blue Devils will be the UVA Ranked Invitational Sept. 25-27.
