CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The UVA Ranked +1 Invitational began Friday with three Duke players earning singles wins in their first matches of the tournament.
Junior Reid Carleton is the defending champion in the tournament and started strong with a straight set win in the A-1 singles draw. Carleton, the No. 2 seed and No. 29 player in the country, defeated Ryan Noble of North Carolina 6-4, 6-3 in the first round and will take on Nebraska's Calen Paar in the next round.
Freshman Henrique Cunha continued to make his mark, improving to 5-1 on the year with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 win over Alex Musialek of Kentucky. Cunha will face his third ranked opponent of the season on Saturday as he squares off against No. 35 Yohann Re of Virginia Tech.
Also winning on day one was junior Jared Pinsky, who downed Taylor Patrick of Tennessee in straight sets 6-3, 7-5. Pinsky moves on for a second round match against Benjamin Chomette of Old Dominion.
Four Blue Devils lost to ranked players in singles on Friday. Torsten Wietoska lost 6-3, 6-1 to No. 20 Boris Conkic of Tennessee. Luke Marchese was defeated by No. 53 James Meredith 6-1, 6-4 of Boise State. No. 86 Dylan Arnould was bested by a higher ranked No. 67 Patricio Alvarado of Southern Miss, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. No. 72 Simon Childs downed David Holland 7-5, 6-1.
In doubles Carleton and Cunha improved to 2-0 with an 8-4 win over the Indiana duo of Armengaud and Ferguson. Marchese and Wietoska lost to the No. 22 pair of Peers and Melo of Middle Tennessee State and Arnould and Holland suffered an 8-4 defeat to Boyajian and Noble of North Carolina.
Play will continue on Saturday at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va.
